Best Laid Plans, Masks & Summer Heat & freebie

No, I didn't get a post together on Sunday as I'd hoped. Gastritis struck and I had to take it easy. Also got word that my shop at Magnolia Gardens Scrap will not open tomorrow. Their tech manager was switching them over to a new server. Not a big deal for me. Still having stomach pain today but found some liquid Mylanta (liquid - yuck) when I went to the store and also picked up some aloe vera juice. When I was in Georgia last year, my friend gave me some to drink when I was having stomach issues. Tastes nasty but it did help. Just got back from a run to the grocery store. Really can't say "run" any more since it now takes forever what with social distancing protocals. Forgot my face shield and had to use a mask I keep in the car. Makes it hard for me to breathe and causes me to overheat quickly. Getting through checkout (or just up to it!) was so slow I was on the point of pushing my cart over to the management desk and telling them to just re-shelve it. I had some ice cream and a few other cold foods in the cart that I was afraid would lose all coolness at the rate things were going, plus I was feeling wiped out. I'm normally reasonably patient but the current state of affairs wears me out.

Having some trouble getting together this Let's Go Fishing kit. Disclaimer: I do not fish. I don't even eat much fish because I don't like a strong taste. For me it's flounder fried Southern style, shrimp (although I have to be careful because of sensitivity to iodine) and Alaskan snow crab legs. (Had some snow crab legs with a salad last night. They usually run around $14- $18/pound around here but he happened on a sale of only $9/pound! He steamed them up, melted some butter and pulled out the Old Bay Seasoning, coleslaw for him and salad with Catalina dressing for me. Great summer meal!) To continue what I intended to say, I don't know the names of all the fish I will be including, and am not certain if some are fresh or salt water fish. It looks to me that what I have is a mix of fly fishing (love those colorful flies), fresh water fishing, and a little salt water fishing. That said, I do think of fishing as being more masculine than feminine and know we needed something masculine for a change. I hope you will find something useful here. You will also see some of my attempts to do more painterly work in a number of papers.

Sorry, no Saturday freebie

Just not feeling well today so not ready to start posting new kit in the works. It is a masculine kit to be called "Let's Go Fishing."

Did sign contract on Magnolia Gardens Scrap today and we are hoping the tech can set me up tomorrow. If she does, I will have to hustle to get stuff loaded as my shop will go live July 1.

In other news, no thaving the muscle spasms I had with last epidural so far, so good.

Learned that one of our nieces has been diagnosed with lymphoma. Not sure which type or how she will be treated.

Husband made his second apple pie and it looks and smells even better than the first. That man can cook! I've been in a mood to bake and last week tried a recipe in the back of my KitchenAid mixer book for sweet roll dough. Did it all as stated and added in some bits of candied orange peel. The dough didn't rise as well as it should have (maybe last of that jar of yeast was too old). But I rolled it out, sprinkled liberally with brown sugar & cinnamon mixture , rolled it up and cut. The rolls expanded width wise but didn't rise more and they were dry as dust! Even heated and slathered with butter, they just weren't good. So disappointing.

Reflux getting worse again so I'll stop for now and hope to get something up tomorrow.

P. S. Claudia - I sent a reply to your comment on your FB page.

Simple CU freebie

It's Wednesday. I missed posting yesterday due to an ear ache. Seems to be just a blocked Eustachian tube as I'm not running a fever. Have sinus headache but since no fever all is go for tomorrow's epidural. I got the contract to be a guest designer at Magnolia Gardens Scraps and should start a month's stay on July 1. After that, it's all negotiable.

Sometimes when I'm doing a vintage scrap, I like to add a bit of ephemera to the page and I thought you might like to as well. So today's offering is 6 pieces of ephemera.

Don't plan to post tomorrow as I can't predict after effects of procedure.

Freebies & lesson

*Disclaimer: I use Photoshop Creative Suite and Photoshop Elements. I am unable to provide guidance for any other programs.

Something a little different today. I mentioned I had been making a lot of brushes recently, didn't I? Thought I'd share some with you and information on use.

When you load a brush into your system it is an .abr for Photoshop and (I think) a .jbr for PSP. To use, you click your brush tool and use the scroll down menu to select the brush you want. When you apply the brush to your page, you get a black or colored (depending on what your foreground color is set to) image in .png form. I call the result a stamp. Now you have a png that has transparent areas or areas of differing intensity. For our purpose here, let's assume you have used one of the frame brushes in the provided zip.

Perhaps you used the round frame. You look at your stamp and think it's a shame it's transparent. What to do? One easy solution is to under paint it (see example). To under paint, it is best if your stamp is done in black to begin with because it is easier to see. Let's start there, with the stamp on a layer by itself. Add a new layer under the stamp, choose a under paint color (it will be your foreground color in tool bar). I chose white, going for a shabby chic look. On that blank layer with your under paint color selected and using the stamp layer above as guide, fill in the transparent area of the stamp using a basic brush tool. Tidy up any areas that went beyond the area of the stamp. Looking through both layers, it is as if your black stamp is now filled in with white. Next, go back to the stamp area and change the color of the stamp (I'm assuming you know how to do this). I made my stamp pink and liked the way the layers looked together so I merged them for a shabby chic frame. With me so far?

You look at your frame and tell yourself it is okay but you wish the colors weren't so flat. What about styling it? There are heaps of free styles available on-line. Choose some that appeal to you and load them into your program. I decided to go with some satin styles. Again, I make a black stamp on a layer by itself and add a blank layer below it. On the blank layer I select a style and using my basic brush tool begin to paint as we did for the under painting. Now I have a layer of satin pink. I tidy it up and go to the stamp layer. I can just change the color of the stamp as we did before or I can click a style, this one a slightly darker pink and the stamp is styled. Happy with the result, just merge layers and you have a styled frame.

I've included the samples in your zip. There are also styled example for the other stamps. The leafy frame is done just as the styled round frame. The flower frame uses multiple styles. Just use a different layer for each. And the bird frame is simply gilded with a gold style.

I hope I've made the instructions clear and that this information will be useful to you.

Thank you!

Thank you for all the lovely responses to my posts. I truly enjoy hearing from you and I apologize for some comments not getting posted in a timely manner. Google almost always sends me an e-mail saying I've got comments and includes the text which I read and then post. I try to watch for those notices daily. However, it seems there were several comments I got no alert on. Since I'm usually notified, I fail to check to see if there are comments waiting. Will need to change that and check for myself.

Looks like we could all do with a bigger stash of elements and I can see to that need easily enough. Yesterday I got caught up in exploring a lot of old (1800- 1900s) ladies magazines. I love looking at the old needlework projects most of which come with little or no instruction. Ladies were just given a picture as inspiration and left to figure out the how-to by themselves. There are a lot of wonderful old embroidery designs. And wonderful black and white illustrations of fashions. I've collected a lot of stuff that I intend to turn into brushes, borders, and lace. I'm also experimenting with deeply textured backgrounds.

One technique that has come up in the progressive scrap challenges I do every month is something you ought to try. It is as simple as choosing 3 or 4 papers, layering them and using various blending modes on each layer to achieve a new look. Let me give you an example. Last month we were given a set of papers and told we could not change the colors only make changes by layering at least 3 and using blending modes. Here is the set preview along with the 3 papers I used.
Here is what I came up with. Used my Bohemian Boudoir kit.

Last of My Lovely Friends

Over the last few months I've been bad about getting posts up on time, so while my oven-baked rosemary chicken and potatoes is starting, thought I'd go ahead and schedule the post for Thursday.

Our next kit will be more masculine but there may be a fewsurprises before that.

What grabs you?

When you are browsing scrap store products, what grabs you first? I was just looking in Oscraps and stopped to think about this. For me, it is color. I love blues, greens, lavender, some shades of pink and soft yellow. Mostly cool colors which I find soothing. I also quickly notice architectural details, and images that evoke emotion. A title like "Becoming" will catch my eye. Since I rarely do traditional scrapbooking any more, I'm attracted to what I'll call art journal stuff - items that speak to emotion and thought. So I'm wondering, what do you gravitate to ? It would be great if you'd answer here on the blog because it would give me a better idea of what interests you and how our interests intersect.

More of My Lovely Friends freebie

Gloomy day here. Raining off and on. Pulmonary visit today. Breathing test sowed 82% lung capacity. My insurance won't pay for the drug prescribed so I took formulary along to see if we could make a change. The only similar drug insurance pays for is one that did noting for me so office will request an exception.

Bat flowers for Mary

I'm not real happy with these bat flowers. They seem so awkward and many of the photos from which I extracted show the flower cut off at odd angles. I hope there is something here you can use. Maybe in some kind of arrangement?

Had nice birthday lunch with grand-daughter yesterday, her two friends, mother and other grand-mother. One of the kids was adorable. The other cute but a royal pain. She literally bounced the entire time! And was noisy and shrill. I went with a headache and needed to go to bed when I got home. Still, it was good to see Larkin.

I've heard from my son and his wife is holding up very well following her sister's suicide. They have been back and forth to Richmond and have gathered up personal items that belonged to DIL's mother and sister. DIL is stuck with all the legal proceedings to come and it is a tangled mess but they are working on it diligently.

Haven't heard anything more from my friend with the new store. After talking to her partner they may have decided that it is too much trouble to set me up as a guest designer. Doesn't matter. I'm back to my art challenges.
This month I've done a template challenge:
A photomask challenge:
Actually there were two mask challenges. Here is the other one:

More Lovely Friends

Had a little more energy today so got a few things done. Nothing much, mind you, just a couple loads of laundry, and some vacuuming. Vacuuming is tough for me so I consider that a big deal lol. Grandson and future bride are away this weekend for a friend's wedding. Son & DIL once again in Richmond trying to settle more of her sister's affairs. Husband and I would so love to take a little road trip but some states quarentine visitors for 14 days if they stay over so that is out. Grand-daughter turned 10 on the 6th but was away visiting her aunt so tomorrow she is having a surprise party to which we have been invited. It's turned hot and humid here so I can only hope I'll have some energy when I get back home and can get a couple things done.

Thank you, dear friend in the Netherlands for lovely quote you sent.

Zip 3 My Lovely Friends

Most of Saturday I was texting back and forth with son about what has to be done to clear up DIL's sister's estate. DIL and son will be doing it all as her father hasn't a clue what to do.

Did follow-up on epidural today. Because it did the most for left side, and I still have throbbing, stabbing pain on left, I'll go in for another injection on 6/25. While out that way made appointment for my eye exam, then stopped for groceries on way home. Hot and humid today, making it difficult for me to breathe. About ready to take a lie-down. But first, another zip for you:

My Lovely Friends

Had grandson and his fiancee over for dinner on Thursday. Nice visit. Cheered me up some. Forget to get this post up for you.

Have had floating anxiety all day today so haven't accomplished much. Don't know what is causing it but it is similar to when my intuition is trying to warn me of something. Praying my son & DIL get back home safely. Jeremy said he'd call me tonight to fill me in on everything. Maybe I'll feel better when I know how much extra responsibility is going to fall on Berkeley's shoulders in terms of handling her sister's affairs.

Looks like I will be going into a shop again. My friend, who designs now as Midnight Velvet, has a new shop called Magnolia Gardens Scraps.
https://www.magnoliagardensscraps.com/
They have a lot of good sales now so you might want to check it out.
I didn't want to make a long term commitment but she is agreeable to me doing a guest spot. I'm thinking maybe for 3 months then see how it goes. Don't want to get locked into too much.

Today I've been working on a new preview template. Want real simple so not hiding much of product. Making a new logo which will go in upper right corner and think otherwise it will just be a white background with a stroked border.

Hoping all are safe and well.

New freebie

Feeling blue about all the current violence and worried about any demonstrations, riots, roadblocks my son & DIL may face as they drive down to Virginia at the end of the week. Hasn't Covid_19 been enough?

Anyway, new kit featuring artwork of griaola. Personal use always unless preview & TOU say CU. I've been asked to be a designer for a new store about to open. One of the owners is my old partner. Not sure yet what I will do.

Re flower requests & family news

SO happy to hear that the astrantia fulfilled a wish. Mary requested 2 more flowers I wasn't familiar with: jade vine & black bat flower. I really like the color of the jade vine, which is also called dragon claws and have found some examples but it will be a challenge to extract, so expect it to take a while. The bat flower is described variously as a lily and an orchid. It goes by several names including black spider flower and cat whiskers - both alluding to all those long whiskery trailing parts. Another challenge to extract.

Meanwhile I've been working a little with a designer resource that features spunky little girls and hoped to get that to you this week. But yesterday I spoke with son and DIL and learned to DIL's older sister (I hardly knew her) died unexpectedly on Saturday and circumstances aren't completely known. Son & DIL live in Pennsylvania but her sister was here in Virginia. DIL will need to help her father with final arrangements. I've offered my services in any way so am in touch with them waiting to see what is to be done. Might mean a delay with blog but I'm sure you understand.
